Now Recruiting for the 2012 Team! Come join us at our next practice! Practice Schedule: Currently we practice Tuesdays, Thursdays, & Saturdays Tuesdays and Thursdays – 6:00pm to 8:00pm Saturdays - 1pm to 3:00pm For More Details: The Lady Outlaws took the field for their first match of 2012 against the Temecula Mountain Lions. Final score: Lady Outlaws 24, Mountain Lions 17.
Match Summary: “The Lady Outlaws scored the first try 15 minutes into the match after a hard fought battle by the forwards. A successful conversion kick by Emily Yoshiko Tao put the score at 7-0. Despite momentum stopping tackles, strong pressure, and a handful of breakaway runs by The Lady Outlaws, the Mountain Lions managed two tries and completed one conversion kick before halftime…putting the Mountain Lions in the lead 12-7 at the halftime break. After making some adjustments during the break the Lady Outlaws stormed back. Carly “Cougar” Helbert got the momentum going with a 30 meter run on the outside for a try. Shortly after rookie Janessa Martinez punched in her first ever try, tying the score at 17-17. (Fact: Janessa decided to play rugby only 48 hours prior to the match—THAT’s kickass my friends, and now she’s hooked!) From there, a long battled ensued between the two teams, the Lady Outlaws forwards fought hard allowing the back-line to put consistent pressure on Temecula with powerful runs and field control from centers Stephanie Cruz and Vanessa Alvarez. The Lady’s wingers complimented with strong outside pressure, and Fly-half Jessica “Kiwi” Szajner sent multiple successful passes to her fellow backs. 8-woman, Emily Yoshiko Tao, lead the forward’s charge with intense breakaway runs–and added two conversions on the day. Tao and the forward pack set up an aggressive center run towards the try-line, resulting in the go-ahead try by rookie center Vanessa Alvarez, giving the Lady Outlaws a 24-17 victory. Alvarez’s enterprising running, tenacious tackling, and her go-ahead try earned her player of the match. Hard runs from the back-line, and consistent pressure from the Outlaws’ forward pack provided a great victory and start to the 2012 season—hard work pays off! Overall, it was a great day for the Ventura County Rugby Club with both the women’s and men’s sides earned wins for the day. Thank you to all supporters for coming to the matches!” by Miguel Jimenez *The Lady Outlaws and the Ventura County Rugby Club would like to give a big thank to California Lutheran University’s rugby club for allowing us to use their pitch on such a short notice due to rain—CLU men’s side scored a victory as well, congrats boys! **The Lady Outlaws next match is Feb 18th in Las Vegas, NV vs. The Las Vegas Slots women’s club. The Lady Outlaws had a fun turnout yesterday for “You get so much food with your order! Thank you to Presto Pasta and all those that came out! Between making 45 dozen tamales for some hard earned cash Lady Outlaws got a posse together to help serve Thanksgiving meals to the homeless “It was a really fun, yet humbling experience. I heard the Community service kicks butt!!! Come join us at our next community event!!! We had a motivated turnout for our first Woodside Park preseason General Manager for the Lady Outlaws, Oy Tate, said after the practice: “From my perspective this was the best practice of preseason He went on to say, “…and the ladies were as focused and committed Here are some shots from Saturday: We wrapped up the last of our pre-preseason sessions this past Saturday. A few The ladies mainly fine tuned a bit of front-row work and sampled some scrum Now it’s officially time for official preseason practice–there, that makes it official! We played CLU Valkyries Ladies! It was well matched for sure. And they graciously filled in players when some of our players had to sit out because of the “out of shapeness”. We played rugby 7s which is different from 15s that we’ve been practicing and the whole point was to help CLU prep for their upcoming scrimmage against USC! 7s is two 7 minutes halves and a 2 minute half time with 7 players on each team. So basically it’s the quickest sporting event ever. Note: Cruz puked 4 times. Feel free to comment on this. The Outlaws were nervous but FREAKING EXCITED and made temporary jerseys…fabric paint makes anything better. (no bejewling allowed) Game Highlights: - Rocky took great direction to coordinate with her team - Cuz is an exceptional hooker. She steals balls really well. If you would like to to hire her, contact Oy or Cruz. - CRUZ SCORED HER FIRST TRY!! This means she is baller. And has to shoot the boot. (drink beer out of a nasty ass shoe) - Tao scored a try AND made both conversion kicks which ultimately made our day. She’s a tough ass gurl. - Stiff tried to take on the entire other team to score a try, which isn’t the best use of energy but was EFFING BADASS. It took all of them to slow her down. Holy bejesus. - Because the Valkyries subbed for us we were able to play better than we thought…thank you CLU! -Final: 14 – 12 Outlaws!! And then there’s the real reason we play rugby: THE SOCIAL! Afterwards we all went to Droughts’s and celebrated. Cruz failed to shoot the boot…this may be directly related to the fact that this was not an official game, but in addition to puking…FAIL! (We love you Cruz!) Oy’s Ladies of the Match: (players who deserve mention!) From CLU Valkyries: Mary-Ann (we don’t know how to spell your name right. :/) From Lady Outlaws: Cruz! (I know how to spell your name) for scoring her first try! And now…PICTURES!! Freedom Park in Camarillo, lady ruggers! |
